A la demande du saxophoniste néerlandais Arno Bornkamp, j'ai écrit Trois pièces de fantaisie pour saxophone alto et piano s'apparentant, dans leur style, à la musique du XIXème siècle, et ayant, comme point de départ, un thème caractéristique emprunté à L'Hymne sacré (H. Berlioz) reconstitué. Dans la première pièce il figure en tant que second thème, tandis que dans la deuxième et la troisième pièce, il se retrouve sous forme d'une paraphrase mélodique. Lorsqu'il est seul, il laisse cours à son tempérament indompté - mais a-t-il vraiment tort de juger exécrable le monde dans lequel nous vivons ? - à cause duquel il ne sera jamais capable de faire le bien, ni pour lui-même ni pour les autres. Dans les compositions originales comme dans les arrangements sélectionnés dans ce recueil, nous avons repris la majeure partie des indications portées par Beethoven, ce qui montre combien celui-ci multipliait les marques de tempo et de caractère contrairement à ce qui ce pratiquait au début de l'époque classique.
