A Fragment of the Immortal Air - Choral Classics sung by Glenalmond College Chamber Choir Glenalmond's choral tradition emanates from our pattern of daily Chapel worship, characterised by lusty hymn-singing. A quarter of the College sings in Chapel Choir: half of these form the Chamber Choir featured on this disc. The anthem forms an integral part of Glenalmond's Sunday service: this programme of music, encompassing the whole of the Church's year, has been part of that repertoire between 2002-04. Editing of this CD has been kept to a minimum and complete takes have been used wherever possible. Occasional rough edges may result, but the advantages are considerable. The enthusiasm and excitement of discovery are almost tangible: endeavour and enthusiasm communicate, together with rhythmic drive and vitality. These are 'springtime' performances. Music by OUP composers Andrew Carter, Bob Chilcott and Richard Shephard (Headmaster of the Minster School, York) is recorded for the first time. How much the choir has enjoyed this privilege. Equally, there is little to rival the challenge of taking on Stainer or Stanford in full throttle, of luxuriating in Mendelssohn's dissonances or of soaring to the rafters in the vaulted contours of Howells's 'Hymn for St Cecilia' - music hard to equal in its ecstatic representation of 'the immortal air'.
